For at-home care, review the common emergencies below.

Lost Permanent Tooth

First, find the tooth. Make sure that you handle the tooth by the top (crown), not the root. If needed, you can rinse the tooth in water, but never handle or clean the tooth more than necessary. Next, try to put the tooth back in, and have your child keep the tooth steady by biting gently on a clean gauze pad or cloth. If you are unable to put the tooth back in, put the tooth in water or milk and call the Smile Shoppe IMMEDIATELY. Time is a critical factor in saving the tooth.

Broken Jaw

If you suspect your child’s jaw is fractured, try to keep the child from moving the jaws. You tie a tie, towel, or handkerchief around the head to secure the jaws. Then, take your child to the closest emergency room.

Broken Tooth

Have the child rinse the area with warm water. Then, place a cold compress over your child’s face near the injury. It’s important to find and save any broken tooth fragments if you can, and be sure to call us as soon as possible.

Have your child thoroughly brush and floss around the sore tooth. Then, give them a warm salt water rinse. You may give your child ibuprofen, but DO NOT place aspirin on the sore tooth or the surrounding gums. You may also apply a cold compress to the face if swelling is present. Then, call our office as soon as possible to schedule an appointment.

Cut or Bitten Cheek, Lip or Tongue

First, apply ice reduce to swelling. If you notice blood, gently but firmly apply pressure with a clean cloth or gauze. If the bleeding continues over 15 minutes or you cannot control it with simple pressure, take your child to the emergency room.

Bleeding After Losing a Baby Tooth

First, fold a clean piece of gauze and place it on the area that is bleeding. Have your child bite gently but firmly on the gauze for approximately 15 minutes. If needed, repeat steps again. If bleeding continues, call our office immediately.

Cold or Canker Sores

"Cold" or "canker" sores are common. Usually, over-the-counter medications can provide relief. However, because sores can be a sign of a more serious disease, schedule an appointment with us if the sores continue.

DIAGNOdent® is a non-invasive laser scanner that can find the slightest hint of decay or weakened areas within your teeth. The pain-free scan takes only minutes
